LOGAN, Utah- Cache Regional Theatre Company (CRTC) is proud to announce its production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The show will run April 24 through May 5, 2008, on the historic Ellen Eccles Theater stage.

CRTC has been bringing northern Utah quality theatrical and musical entertainment for 25 years. "We create the opportunity for members of our community to come together and perform on this spectacular stage," said Floyd Salisbury, general director and president of CRTC. "The excellence of what we do is evident by the great support we receive from our patrons. Cache Valley is our home and we want to give the community another great event, this magical childhood story."

The cast of Beauty and the Beast ranges from high school seniors to university professors. Local superstar talent, Sarah Swenson, 20, will be playing the roll of Belle. "I have performed my whole life. This is my dream roll," said Swenson. Swenson will be joined by fellow Utah State University Ambassador, Lee Cannon, 21, who will play the Beast. Recently returning from a concert tour of eastern Europe, Cannon is eager to once again perform on the Eccles Stage. "The Cache Regional Theatre Company has become a second family to me. I am honored to come back to this organization and work with these fantastic people in this powerful musical," said Cannon.

Dear Ms Wheeler,

Housed in the Cache County Chamber of Commerce at 7 p.m., every other Thursday, the program is free of charge and has already begun to change lives of participants across our community. The sessions are run by President Preston Parker, a professor from Utah State University.

This is an organization that is improving the standard of living in Cache Valley. You can benefit from it just as much as I can. Many people in our community are not aware of this phenomenal opportunity that we have.

Assignment #2: Press Release Stories, JCOM 2300

Faith in America

http://www.mittromney.com/News/Press-Releases/Faith_In_America_Address

The Mitt Romney for President team released this press release announcing Gov. Romney's decision to address the topic of religion. I chose three articles that were written from this press release:

http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/12/romneys_religion_speech_pros_a.php

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/12/04/romney.speech/index.html?iref=newssearch

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/12/06/local_mormons_await_romney_speech/

The first article is actually a blog post by political analyst Marc Ambinder. He simply lays out the possible pros and cons of Gov. Romney's "Faith in America" address. The neutrality of this piece is very evident. Six pros are presented along with six cons. The balance of positive and negative possible outcomes provides the reader with all options to form their pre-speech opinions.

The CNN, Romney: Religion address won't be 'a JFK speech', has a cautious tone. As a news article, CNN is expected to be unbiased. I feel that in this analysis by CNN on the Romney announcement does not live up to a silenced personal bias. By giving one true or positive statement, the author feels justified in stringing together unneeded information. The paragraph devoted to polygamy is completely irrelevant to the rest of the article. Overall I would view this article is leaning toward a skeptic neutrality. The article, however, did not address the press release very well. Only the first four paragraphs were about the press release and the last 11 paragraphs discussed topics indirectly linked to the press release.

The Boston.com article is definately biased. It is a very positive piece for the LDS Church and for Mitt Romney. Again, the focus is taken away from the actual speech. The focus is given instead to local LDS youth and a hope of understanding. The LDS reader felt very comfortable reading this article. I appreciated the feeling of optimism in the article and the personal connection that the author made with individuals within the community and religion. I would say that this was positive and passed an appropriate look into the effect this speech could have on the LDS population and the outlook on Gov. Romney's religion.

Step 3: Analysis

I will be completely honest, I was very frustrated by this assignment. It took me a very long time to decide what interest I wanted to persue. I realized how difficult it is for reporters to find a good press release and write an article that relates to the actual released document. Overall I felt that this assignment opened my eyes to the small but significant effect press releases can have. Before this assignment I thought that public relations was simply press release after press release. But now I see that press releases are but a drop in the bucket of public relations.

In the Mitt Romney press release, his campaign manager is quoted along with personal referrences to Romney. The quality of this press release was quite good. The target of this press release was the media, and they bit the hook. Gov. Romney needed a publicity moment and he wanted to speak about religious freedoms and faith. This press release forced every major news organization to produce multiple stories about the much anticipated speech.

I have learned a valuable lesson through this exersise. A press release must be intriguing, informational and worth writing about.

Letter to Cousin

Dear Anne, January 14, 2008

Your last letter was awesome! It is great to hear that your swelling has gone down. I remember the last time you were pregnant, your feet looked like eggplants before Sage was born. I hope you continue to feel better and less bulged.

I am up in Logan and loving every minute of it. The snow and ice are annoying but my studies are keeping me happy. I decided on majoring in public relations. Many people do not know what public relations is and I wanted to tell you about it. Public relations is a fairly new field of study and very innovative. The program teaches me how to communicate with a purpose. I am learning how to develop a thought, process it into a message and then present that message as a personally tailored message, appealing to a specific group. Public relations is all about understanding. I have to understand the needs of consumers and convince them that they need what I am promoting. It is not marketing because marketing focuses on selling products while public relations promotes selling the company. The public relations side deals a lot more with the heart instead of the brain of the customer.

I have an internship this semester that will help me understand public relations even more. I will be the public relations and marketing director for the Cache Regional Theatre Company. I am excited for this chance to explore this field. I got the part of the beast in Beauty and the Beast with this company and am looking forward to making this show awesome both on and off the stage. I have been organizing publicity events, designing posters and arranging sponsors for the show. It will be spectacular when it is all done!

I hope to hear from you soon. Please send me love to Uncle Melvin and Aunt Beulah.

Love,

Lee
